As political landscapes around the world continue to evolve, many Western nations find themselves grappling with a sense of disillusionment towards democracy. This feeling has been exacerbated by numerous crises, including financial downturns and armed conflicts, leading people to seek solutions that simplify complex realities. In today's rapidly changing environment, where the rules of governance are often perceived as inconsistent, the viability of political systems established centuries ago faces new pressures. Much like an ancient structure needing renovations to withstand the test of time, so too do democracies require updates to adapt to modern life. Understanding Authoritarianism in the West Contrary to dramatic narratives of coups, the rise of authoritarianism in the West often occurs through democratic means. Leaders campaign with promises to weaken the very institutions that uphold democratic principles, framing their actions as necessary for restoring safety and identity. In this context, the allure of sacrificing freedoms for perceived security becomes a troubling trend. Amidst this backdrop, the perception of democracy’s fragility grows even as many in the West display a sort of historical amnesia when it comes to authoritarian governance. It's been generations since Western Europe faced immediate threats, and the U.S. has experienced a relatively stable democratic environment. When a Russian-influenced president attempted to subvert the will of the people in favor of closer ties to Russia, widespread protests erupted, symbolically turning his luxurious residence into a museum as a cautionary tale for future leaders. In contrast to nations that may slide towards autocracy under existential threats, Ukraine’s response reflects a powerful commitment to democracy. The invasion by President Vladimir Putin galvanized this resolve, turning Ukraine into a battleground where the fight for democracy is both tangible and intense. When President Volodymyr Zelensky's attempts to undermine anti-corruption reforms faced backlash, citizens took to the streets, voicing their discontent with the refrain, “Why the f*ck do I need a system that works against me?” This response is a testament to the deep-rooted desire for accountability and justice.
