Following a significant electoral victory, Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz has outlined a vision for a stronger Germany that aims to unite Europe and the U.S. in their response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In his inaugural policy address, Merz highlighted his commitment to restore Germany's economic vitality and establish the nation as Europe's foremost conventional military power.
Merz, who assumed office just over a week ago after a decisive win in February, has already embarked on multiple diplomatic missions throughout Europe, including a joint visit to Kyiv with leaders from France, Poland, and the U.K. His administration seeks to provide greater stability and reliability to its European partners, a clear pivot from the previous government's struggles, as noted by Merz: "Europe expects something from us," he stated emphatically in parliament.
The coalition government, combining Merz's center-right Union bloc with the center-left Social Democrats of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, marks a shift towards decisive action in European policy matters. Merz emphasized that Germany must move beyond its previous hesitations on critical European issues, which have, until now, weakened its standing.
One of Merz's priorities is maintaining strong support for Ukraine by bolstering ties with the United States. He expressed gratitude for President Donald Trump's backing for a ceasefire, underscoring the collective need to counter Russian aggression. "Anyone who believes Russia would be content with a victory over Ukraine or parts of Ukraine, or the annexation of parts of the country, is wrong," he declared, additionally rejecting any notion of a compromised peace.
Merz's administration is also seeking to reverse Germany's previous hesitance in military spending, with plans already underway to increase defense budgets through the relaxation of strict debt regulations. "The government will in the future provide all the financing the Bundeswehr needs to become the strongest conventional army in Europe," he pledged, reflecting the increasing pressure from allies for Germany to play a more prominent security role.
With a recent promise to meet NATO's defense spending target of 2% of GDP, which was reinforced after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany is also strategizing beyond this goal. Merz acknowledged the fundamental link between Germany's economic strength and its security, committing to methods aimed at fostering growth, digitization, and fewer bureaucratic hurdles for businesses.
"We will do everything to get Germany's economy back on the course of growth," he remarked, emphasizing the necessity of reforms to reclaim the title of "locomotive of growth" for Europe's largest economy. His ambition reflects a broader intent to reinvigorate the economy amidst challenges and reinforce Germany's influence within both Europe and the international community.
