In a significant development, four members of Germany's Green Party have formally urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to enhance financial support for Ukraine amid rising security concerns. This appeal highlights the ongoing commitment to bolster Ukraine's defenses as it faces increased aggression from Russia.

Request for Increased Aid: The lawmakers, Robin Wagener, Sara Nanni, Sebastian Schäfer, and Anton Hofreiter, are calling on the Chancellor to revise and increase budget allocations to support Ukraine for the upcoming fiscal year. This request comes in light of the latest Russian airstrikes, which have intensified calls for improved air defense capabilities.
The MPs articulated urgent concerns, stating, "The situation is critical. While Putin openly confirms that he will not negotiate and is fully committed to his military goals, while Putin terrorises the civilian population with increasingly large-scale air strikes, the US government refuses to provide the aid it has already promised."
Support for Previous Defense Efforts: In their letter, the Green politicians also reminded Chancellor Merz of the pivotal role their party played in increasing defense spending through their votes in the prior Bundestag. They emphasized that there is still potential for Merz to expand support for Ukraine.
Background Context:
The previous government, under Chancellor Olaf Scholz, had previously committed an additional €3 billion in military aid for Ukraine in 2025, alongside a further €8.3 billion planned from 2026 to 2029.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has indicated in June that Germany would also be providing an additional €1.9 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
