On Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz embarks on his first official meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington, a trip underscored by a solid coalition among European nations supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions in the region. This significant diplomatic engagement marks a pivotal moment for both leaders as they navigate the complexities of the conflict. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed hope that Merz would articulate a robust stance on freedom during discussions with Trump, emphasizing the need for continued support for Ukraine. "I hope that he will formulate a strong position of freedom alongside the US president in support of Ukraine," Wadephul stated during a meeting with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in Berlin. Wadephul pointed out that the current European solidarity regarding support for Ukraine is unprecedented in recent history. "That is why a strengthened chancellor is travelling to Washington with a great deal of positive European backing," he noted, highlighting this unprecedented moment for unity among European nations. Notably, Merz's visit marks him as the first European leader to meet with Trump since the start of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, a fact Wadephul underscored. He emphasized that "Europe expects that together, the US and Europe will now bring Russia to the negotiating table." He further asserted, "This opportunity for peace must not be wasted. And this war must finally come to a just end." The Chancellor is set to arrive in Washington on Wednesday evening, ahead of a packed schedule that includes a private meeting with Trump, a joint lunch, and a press conference in the Oval Office on Thursday.
