Military Deployment in Los Angeles Amid Immigration Protests Expected to Cost $134 Million
The ongoing protests against federal immigration operations in Los Angeles have prompted President Donald Trump to deploy National Guard troops and Marines to the city. A Pentagon official estimated the deployment will incur expenses of approximately $134 million.
According to Acting Pentagon Comptroller Bryn Woollacott MacDonnell, the projected costs primarily cover housing, travel, and feeding the deployed forces. MacDonnell provided these details during a House subcommittee hearing where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was also present.
The current deployment includes around 4,000 members of the California National Guard and approximately 700 Marines. Funding for this operation comes from the military’s Operation & Maintenance accounts.
Defense Secretary Hegseth defended the necessity of the troop deployment, stating it is essential for maintaining community safety and supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. He mentioned that the mission is slated to last for 60 days, emphasizing, "Every American citizen deserves to live in a community that's safe, and ICE agents need to be able to do their job."
