In a recent announcement, President Trump has imposed a new 10-day ultimatum for Russia to establish a ceasefire with Ukraine, warning that failure to do so could lead to secondary sanctions. This deadline means that the Kremlin has until August 8 to negotiate a ceasefire agreement.
During a flight back to the United States after a five-day trip to Scotland, where he had engaged in talks regarding trade with European leaders, Trump stated, "Ten days from today. Okay?" This remark revised his earlier position, which granted Russia a 50-day period for negotiations.
Trump elaborated on his intentions, indicating that tariffs would be imposed if Russia fails to comply with his demand. "We’re going to put on tariffs and stuff," he noted, discussing the potential impact on Russia, particularly with respect to President Vladimir Putin's intentions regarding the ongoing conflict.
The U.S. and its ally, Ukraine, are advocating for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate a sustainable peace agreement. Trump previously indicated that non-compliance by Russia could trigger tariffs of up to 100% on goods traded with countries supporting Russia.
Expressing growing discontent towards Putin, Trump questioned the Russian leader's commitment to ending the violence in Ukraine. "I always hang up, [and] say, 'Well, that was a nice phone call,'" he reflected, only to witness continued aggression the following day.
Earlier in July, Trump had seemed more hopeful about peace discussions, suggesting that Putin could be interested in resolving the conflict. However, his stance has shifted in light of ongoing attacks. Upon his return from Scotland, Trump remarked on his disappointment with Putin due to the sustained assaults, further tightening the timeline for an agreement to a mere 10 to 12 days.
"There's no reason in waiting," Trump asserted, emphasizing the absence of progress in negotiations with Russia. His comments reflect a notable change in tone as diplomatic efforts continue amidst escalating tensions in the region.
