Ukraine Expands Security Service Personnel to Enhance National Defense

In a significant move aimed at bolstering national security, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted new legislation on 28 July to expand the personnel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

Key Provisions: The law stipulates an increase in the SSU workforce from 27,000 to 37,000 in peacetime, with a further rise during special circumstances, raising the total to 41,000 personnel.
The legislation also establishes that the operational combat unit Special Group Alpha will absorb the responsibilities of the counter-terrorism division and the department responsible for criminal justice protection, expanding its team to 10,000 members.
Furthermore, the law empowers SSU members to utilize weapons and military equipment comparable to that of military units within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This capability will be applicable during anti-terrorist operations and during efforts to secure the nation against armed aggression.
Legislative Background: This new law was passed with support from 311 lawmakers during a parliamentary vote on 16 July.
