Latest Developments in Ukraine as of July 22 Russian forces have entered the city of Pokrovsk amid ongoing Ukrainian military operations. Ukrainian President Zelensky announces a delegation for forthcoming peace discussions with Russia in Istanbul. Reports emerge of Russian efforts to recruit children through educational programs and gaming initiatives for drone operation training. The U.S. NATO ambassador cautions China about its financial support for Russia's military actions in Ukraine. According to Ukraine's intelligence chief, Russia is set to invest $1.1 trillion in military preparations for a potential large-scale conflict. Russian troops have reportedly breached the front lines of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast, according to information from battlefield monitoring groups and local soldiers on July 22. This city, located approximately 67 kilometers (41 miles) from the occupied Donetsk region, has become critical in the current military offensive. As Ukrainian drone operations continue, a soldier on the ground indicated to the Kyiv Independent that some Russian forces have penetrated the city limits. Nevertheless, the extent of their control within the city remains ambiguous. DeepState reports that Russian forces advanced into Pokrovsk by taking advantage of vulnerable Ukrainian positions. This incursion led to a rapid Ukrainian military response to avoid a catastrophic escalation in the situation. DeepState noted that Russian units attempted to establish a foothold on Defenders of Ukraine Street. Casualties have been reported among the Ukrainian defense forces during subsequent operations against these infiltrations, exacerbated by a lack of accurate intelligence regarding enemy positions. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized the determination of Ukrainian forces defending Pokrovsk against persistent Russian assaults. He previously characterized the city as the most intense battleground across the 1,200-kilometer front line. He cautioned about Russian efforts to disrupt supply lines from northern Dobropillia, highlighting that over 110,000 Russian troops have concentrated in the region as of early summer. Peace Negotiations Planned in Istanbul In a separate development, President Volodymyr Zelensky has designated a delegation to engage in peace talks with Russia, scheduled for July 23 in Istanbul. The team will be spearheaded by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and will involve representatives from Ukraine’s military intelligence and Foreign Ministry. Zelensky conveyed that Ukraine's stance in negotiations remains clear, stating, “Ukraine never wanted this war, and it is Russia that must end the war that it started.” The preparation for future prisoner exchanges is also reportedly on the agenda, with Umerov confirming that arrangements from previous discussions are in progress.
