In a significant step towards reinforcing sanctions against Russia, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted a decree that aligns the country’s sanction efforts with its international allies. This move aims to unify the response towards Russia’s actions through coordinated international pressure. Source: This information has been reported based on a decree published on the president's official site, as shared by European Pravda. Official Statement: President Zelenskyy stated, “In accordance with Article 107 of the Constitution of Ukraine, I decree: to put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine dated 27 June 2025 ‘On synchronisation of sanctions pressure of Ukraine, the European Union and other members of the Group of Seven on the Russian Federation and related subjects.’” Implementation Details: The recent decision from Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council outlines that sanctions approved by allied nations must be synchronized within Ukraine's legal framework. The timeframe specified is that sanctions should be submitted for consideration and approved within 15 days following their adoption by partner states. Key government bodies, including the Cabinet of Ministers, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), and the National Bank, are charged with the responsibility of implementing these sanctions fully as endorsed by international partners. Further, the alignment of sanctions related to Russia's military actions is a priority for the Cabinet, SSU, the Foreign Intelligence Service, and the Office of the Prosecutor General. The goal is to apply "the most severe consequences for the Russian Federation for the criminal and unprovoked war unleashed against Ukraine and the subsequent tangible limitation of the defence industry potential of the aggressor state." Context: On June 19, 2025, President Zelenskyy announced initiatives to synchronize sanctions with international allies and bolster pressure on Russia’s energy sector. Additionally, the EU has yet to finalize its 18th sanctions package targeting Russia. Notably, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed intentions to block any EU sanctions on Russia that might negatively impact Slovakia’s national interests.
