In a significant move amid ongoing tensions, the United States is reportedly set to deliver advanced air defense systems to Ukraine. This decision follows actions by former President Donald Trump, who recently finalized a minerals agreement with Kyiv and issued threats to retreat from peace discussions. Reports indicate that one Patriot defense system will be transferred from Israel after a refurbishment, with additional systems potentially coming from Germany or Greece, as confirmed by unnamed officials to the New York Times. Previously, Trump had halted military shipments to Ukraine after a dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a White House showdown. However, Trump's increasing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to agree to a ceasefire has led to his withdrawal from formal peace negotiations. Former President Joe Biden secured the defense deal with Israel back in September 2023, prior to Trump's electoral success, according to insights from a former White House official. This announcement comes just before a potential three-day ceasefire coinciding with the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, though President Zelensky has publicly dismissed the truce as a “theatrical performance” that he does not intend to honor, citing a lack of trust in Russia's commitments. Last year, Zelensky called on Western nations for a minimum of seven Patriot defense systems to safeguard Ukrainian cities from ongoing Russian missile strikes. Currently, Ukraine possesses eight systems, but only six are operational, with the remaining two under refurbishment. A representative from the US National Security Council noted that specific details regarding the deployment and capabilities of the defense systems were not available for public release. “President Trump has been clear: he wants the war in Ukraine to end and the killing to stop,” the spokesperson stated. Amidst these developments, Russia executed a drone assault on Kyiv overnight, which resulted in injuries to at least 11 individuals, including two children, and set several residential structures ablaze. This strike demonstrates the continued risks faced by civilians in the capital. According to Kyiv's military administration head, Timur Tkachenko, falling debris from the downed drones ignited multiple fires in various districts of the city, necessitating the involvement of dozens of firefighters to manage the blazes. In a recent interview, Trump hinted that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine remains distant and admitted to moments nearing withdrawal from talks. “I believe we’re closer with one party, and maybe not as close with the other,” he remarked, choosing not to specify which party he referred to. Conversely, in remarks to state media, Putin expressed a desire not to resort to nuclear weaponry in the conflict, stating, “There has been no need to use those [nuclear] weapons... and I hope they will not be required,” following inquiries about Ukraine's actions. Recent military activities have also seen Ukrainian forces targeting an electrical factory in Russia's Bryansk region, reportedly causing extensive damage without casualties. While discussions regarding a proposed three-day ceasefire continue, Zelensky remains skeptical of Russia's sincerity, skeptical of claims made by the Kremlin. He referred to previous instances when
